AFL Masters Australian Football (AFLM formerly Masters Australian Football and Superules Australia Inc) provides the opportunity for players 30 years and over to enjoy the game of Aussie Rules Football in a safe, supportive, family orientated and fun environment.

AFLM has a national standardised set of modified rules designed to reduce the risks of injury and is acknowledged and supported by the AFL and the Australian Sports Commission.

The Castlemaine Football Netball Club Masters side was established in 2002 by CFNC Life Member Jim Moran. with the dedicated assistance of a few others.

There was a need at the time for this team as plenty of guys had stopped playing competitive football and still loved the game and all that it brought into their lives. It just so happened there was a country competition already in existence and all we needed to do was recruit enough people to fill as team.

The team trains every Wednesday evening at the Camp Reserve throughout the year andThe team had five exhibition matches in that first year and then joined the Vic. Country Masters fixture properly playing 11 matches per year from then on.

Unfortunately, the ravages of time has meant the team now boasts an ageing list with most over 55 years old and some veterans over 60. For that reason, and with current lack of young men around 35 years of age not still playing competitive football, the team withdrew from the league and is now a training squad of just as keen footballers, but without the need to put their bodies on the line.

The team still trains at 6pm every Wednesday evening at the Camp Reserve throughout the year for a kick and a giggle. Some members compete in the annual Bali Masters 9’s Australian Football Tournament, due to celebrate its 15th year in 2019.

The Castlemaine Super Rules side proudly boast 9 CFNC Life Members amongst its ranks: Ron Cawthan, Dale Williams, Brett Fitzpatrick, Jim Moran, Peter Bower, Gary Holden, Tony Height, Stephen Farrell and John Hunter.

The team also proudly boasts a few guys that played over 100 games: Peter “Petrol” Bower, Stephen ”Fadge” Farrell, Jim “Pres” Moran and Neville “ Coops” Cooper

If you love your footy but are getting too old to keep up with the young blokes, this is the game for you. If you and your friends want to come down, you’d be made very welcome, no matter your age, ambitions or abilities.
