2019 has seen the Castlemaine Football Netball Club attract a number of  high quality recruits and retain all Melbourne-based recruits from 2018. Attracting the most attention is former Essendon and Port Adelaide star, Angus Monfries.

A 200+ AFL player Angus is a great fit for our group and will help to shape the direction the club takes for the coming years. He played VFL Football with the Footscray Bulldogs in 2018 and was selected in the 2018 VFL Team of the Year. Angus will also coach the forward line and has a keen interest in the development of our game plan and style – particularly for our younger and developing players.

Other recruits joining the 2019 ranks

  • Mitch Hough – Strong bodied Mid with elite ball winning skills. Previously played in the BFNL and recently in the GVFL.
  • Matt Filo – Classy mid/forward. Strong bodied and a quality running player. Played at Kangaroo Flat 2018. We were keen to get him to the club when his dad Shawn became Co Coach.
  • Jordy Matera– Strong bodied mid/ forward. Played with VFL Sandringham 2018 but missed a lot of football through injury. Looking for a break out year and will be a damaging in our forward half.
  • Mitch Dance – Key forward. Played his junior football at Sandy Bay in Tasmania. Moved to Melbourne and will be a prominent goal kicker and target for us in 2019.
  • Daniel Easson – Strong bodied, hard running mid fielder who can go forward or back. Played in the VAFA but returned home to his country club last year to help with their finals aspirations.
  • Sam Simpson – Running player that provides us with many options. Great endurance and speed and will set up many scoring opportunities through his hard work.

Senior Co Coaches: Derrick Filo & Shawn Filo

Derrick Filo, who played over 400 Bendigo league senior games and captained the Castlemaine 1992 Premiership team continues in his third year as Senior Coach. Michelsen Medalist and four time BFNL Premiership coach, Derrick brings a wealth of experience to the role.

We welcome Shawn Filo back to the Club as Co Coach for 2019. Shawn is a CFNC Premiership player and has a long and successful coaching record. A meticulous planner with a great knowledge of the current game, Shawn’s appointment helps reinforce a teaching environment for our playing group and provides Derrick and the playing group with tactical support and strategic direction.

Derrick and Shawn have added some new faces to their game day support with former players and experienced coaches David Cox and Don Moran taking on the mid field and Defensive Coaching roles and Damian Bird rounding out the coaching group.
